Former Bachelorette suitors Brayden Bowers and Aaron Schwartzman are lucky to be alive after their boat sank during a fishing trip off the coast of San Diego.

The reality stars, who will appear again on the upcoming season of Bachelor in Paradise, were out for a day of fishing with three friends when disaster struck.

Brayden explained to Fox 5 San Diego that they were 15 to 20 miles off the coast when his buddy Gavin got his line stuck on the engine propeller. Aaron went to the back of the boat to lift the engine and try and untangle it.

“All of a sudden, as soon as he stands on the swim deck…the boat literally just sunk,” Travel nurse Brayden told the local news station.

Aaron, who is a fireman, elaborated about the terrifying experience, “You think of the next steps …. but … what are the next steps when you’re 15 miles in the ocean, in a wind swell?

“We just tried to paddle to shore, so we linked arms and we kind of just started kicking," Brayden said.

“It’s like being trapped and helpless because there’s no service, we weren’t able to send a distress signal at all, and the only thing you have out there is hope, hope that somebody finds you, hope that a helicopter flies over,” Aaron said.

They were stuck in the water for three-and-a-half hours before two cousins who were fishing in the area saw a reflection in the water and wound up finding the guys.

“We were looking for yellowfin tuna and then found a school of men,” said Chris Keeran, who was fishing with his cousin, T.J.

More seriously, he said, “We don’t consider ourselves heroes... I’m just so grateful by the grace of God, we actually did see something reflective. Just the things that had to add up just to get to them. I mean, once we did find them, that was our best catch of the day.”
