The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 9, Recap: Hannah Refuses to Give Out a Final Rose

I actually did not see this twist coming.

With so much to discuss about tonight's Bachelorette, let's get straight into the hometown dates. Cool? Cool. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

First is Peter the Pilot's hometown in Los Angeles. Their date involves—what else?—Peter flying a plane. He and Hannah soar over the Bachelor mansion and then make out so intensely midflight that I worry for their safety. Fortunately, they land without incident and head to his family's home.

Now, the families of Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants usually have two speeds on these hometown visits: wildly, blindly encouraging of the relationship or so skeptical they might as well have a "Get off my lawn" sign out front. Peter's family falls toward the former, though they don't come across as clueless as those in seasons past. His mother, father, and brother are so warm, supportive, and happy, it feels borderline disconcerting—however, they make it clear that seeing their son potentially get engaged in a matter of weeks is scary.

That said, Hannah's time with Peter's family goes well. (But you can tell she's debating whether or not she wants to sign up for a lifetime of doing that German prayer his family screams before every meal, which, according to Peter's dad, translates to "Happy is the mealtime feast. Happy! Happy! Happy! Let's eat!") There's an especially sweet moment when Peter's dad breaks down crying as he describes how he just wants the best for his son.

As good as the date is, Peter still holds back from telling Hannah that he's in love with her. That might not be an issue…if he wasn't the first date of the week. You never know how the other relationships can progress at this stage.

Speaking of other relationships, Hannah travels to Jupiter, Florida, for her hometown date with Tyler. And he's planned a great day: rubbing sunscreen all over his abs. OK, fine, that's just the start; though I doubt Hannah would complain if the day began and ended there.

The date only goes uphill from there: Hannah gets to sit on Tyler's lap while he drives a boat named the Reel Clean and points out the local sights, followed by a swim (and make-out session) in the sea. "It's super hot kissing Tyler," Hannah says, to the shock of no one.

I would have loved more time watching Tyler splash around the ocean, but I guess Hannah does have to meet his family. And this hometown is especially emotional because Tyler's dad was suffering from a paralyzed vocal chord—and Tyler hasn't seen him since he left for the show, so it's been hard to not know how the recovery's been going.

So of course I tear up when Tyler and his dad are reunited. When the two sit down for a chat, Tyler admits he's taking this process seriously because he wants his dad to be able to see him with a wife and kids someday. His dad replies that he hasn't seen Tyler this happy in a long time. And I'm crying again.

Hannah's talk with Dad is just as sweet—apparently Tyler hasn't had many girlfriends, so it's good but scary to see him so enamored. Damn, as if we needed another reason to love Tyler. Before Hannah leaves, she and Tyler make out in the backseat of an SUV while the driver stares forward and does his best to pretend like it's not happening. A pro!

The third hometown date is with Luke in Gainesville, Georgia. He takes her to a church meeting, where he stands up and shares the story we've heard before: how he was "tangled up in sin" until God spoke to him in the shower. It feels more like a motivational speech than anything else, but Hannah seems into it? When they break out into smaller groups, everyone praises Luke so much it feels like a setup. Um, have you all met Luke? Maybe they thought Hannah was asking about some amazing dude named Duke?

Less strange: When Hannah and Luke meet his family for the first time, one brave uncle asks an important question, "Why is he here?" Another family member shouts, "Thanks for putting up with him!"

They're joking—I think—because the family spends the rest of the time praising Luke and assuring Hannah that he's not at all like the person she's spent the last several weeks with. Who's that guy then?

Before she leaves, Luke apologizes for being the worst and tells her "without a doubt" he loves her.

The final hometown date is with Jed in Knoxville, Tennessee. Jed kicks it off by asking Hannah to write and record a song with him in studio. They create something that sounds like it could be in the background of a Laguna Beach scene, which is to say it's both good and awful. After they record, Jed tells Hannah he's in love with her.

Thanks to this declaration of love, Hannah feels confident going into her dinner with Jed's family. Poor Hannah: Didn't she know the rules of The Bachelorette state that at least one family has to be skeptical and hard to win over? It all starts when Jed's mom gives a vague toast about intuition and how "when you stick to your truth, it's better for everyone." Then Jed's father says he can't wrap his head around any of this—the show, the potential engagement, etc. And when Hannah talks to Jed's mom, it doesn't go well. Hannah says she's falling for Jed, to which his mom is like, "Yeah, but I bet you say that to all the boys." Undeterred, Hannah asks Jed's mom if she thinks her son is ready to get engaged. Mom says he's still prioritizing his music career over everything else. Yikes.

Double yikes comes when Jed's sister straight up tells Hannah she thinks it wouldn't be a good thing if Jed fell in love right now. With so many seeds of doubt planted, Hannah realizes she needs to think more about whether or not this relationship could actually work.

When Hannah arrives at the rose ceremony, however, she's still conflicted. She gives Peter a rose, then Tyler. But before she hands out the final rose, she leaves the room. Chris Harrison checks in on her, and Hannah says she doesn't have clarity with any of these relationships. She's afraid if she sends any of them home, it will feel like a mistake. So when she rejoins the guys, she reveals she can't give out a final rose and she wants them all to continue on this journey.

Jed's reaction is about right:

Basically, he doesn't like being in the same category as Luke—like it was a toss-up between the two of them. They both accept the roses, though, so I guess we'll see how that plays out next week. Can't wait!
