New Bachelor Colton Underwood on the Qualities He Wants in a Wife: “I Like to Be Challenged”

New Bachelor Colton Underwood definitely wants to be a husband. In the months ahead, the season 23 lead of ABC’s smash franchise will be courting and dating dozens of women vying for his heart as the storylines pan out on national television, but he’s already entering into the process with some focus.

Underwood, 26, explained to Ellen DeGeneres Thursday, September 20, that he had no idea he was a contender for the Bachelor role. “No, I found out very shortly before Good Morning America,” he said. “But now I’m on Ellen!”

When the offer was presented to him, Underwood approached it from an angle of knowing how his experiences on the previous shows impacted his personal growth. “I know how it was to go through Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise–and to continue to grow,” he said. “I definitely got the closure that I needed from Becca [Kufrin]. I’m still good friends with [her fiancé] Garrett [Yrigoyen]. Becca actually congratulated me after I got named, same with Tia [Booth, his ex].”

While he still maintains a friendship with Booth and others, Underwood claims he’s looking to meet his lasting love. “I’m so ready, I’m so excited to not only meet my fiancée and my wife but also the mother of my children and somebody I want to spend the rest of my life with. I feel like I was born to be a dad, so I’m super excited for this,” he continued.

The qualities are simple: “I need somebody who’s fun, spontaneous, outgoing,” he told Ellen on Thursday. “Appearance-wise, it’s sort of all across the board. But I just need somebody who’s a good person and somebody who could be a good mother… I like to be challenged in a relationship, too. Somebody who can push me and allow me to grow and sort of take me out of my comfort zone at times.”

The program ended with Underwood meeting three of his contestants during a rapid-fire game show portion of his appearance on Ellen. The game, however, ended with the Bachelor greeting only one of his contestants (Annie) as opposed to all three.
