Mandalorian Grogu film teaser

The Mandalorian has been one of the biggest breakout hits in the Disney era of Star Wars, with some of that success being undoubtedly due to baby Yoda — known officially as Grogu. Now, after three seasons on Disney+, Mando and his baby apprentice are headed to the big screen.

Disney announced on the official Star Wars website that a new movie is set to go into production this year, titled The Mandalorian & Grogu. It’s not the most exciting name, honestly, but it certainly gets the point across. Disney says the film will be directed by Jon Favreau, who’ll also be producing it alongside Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy.

Favreau previously helped create The Mandalorian, acting as its lead writer and showrunner throughout its three season run. In the announcement post, Favreau expressed excitement at the upcoming film, and paid props to George Lucas for creating the Star Wars universe.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said in the post, “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

The Mandalorian & Grogu is one of four feature films currently in production in the Star Wars franchise. Other films include a New Jedi Order film by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a Dawn of the Jedi film by James Mangold, and a New Republic era film from Dave Filoni. The announcement of the film also accompanied the reveal of a second season of Ahsoka, which is being headed up by Filoni.

A fourth season of The Mandalorian is also in production, with Favreau saying it would be informed by the first season of Ahsoka and the upcoming Skeleton Crew show. It’s not known where The Mandalorian & Grogu will fit into the picture, but it’s expected it will probably take place after season 4.
