Mission Critical uses military-grade materials to construct rugged baby carriers that make it safe and easy for adventurous dads to carry their most precious cargo anywhere they go!

Andrew Wollenberg, founder of Mission Critical (@missioncriticalgear), was inspired to make a baby carrier designed especially for dads after his brother had his second daughter.

“[My brother] was a volunteer firefighter and an EMT so he had all this really cool gear that he used for both work and hobbies,” Andrew explained. “I noticed there were no baby carriers out there like that designed for dads, and that’s where it started.”

Andrew wanted to design bags that were both safe and stylish. He spent over a year developing the first Mission Critical bag, trying to create a baby carrier that was sleek and modern-looking, while also being extremely safe.

To achieve this, he studied different kinds of safety equipment. “Basically, I researched all kinds of emergency gear,” he said. “So, rock climbing and different things first responders would use, because if I was going to do this, I wanted to make an extremely safe product.”

The result was Mission Critical’s first baby carrier, the S.O1 Action Baby Carrier. The unique baby carrier has a MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) system for attaching different tools and equipment, and, according to Andrew, has a “tactical feel.”

Since then, Mission Critical has designed a variety of baby carriers and diaper bags. Bags in the S.O1 series are designed for everyday use, while those in the S.O2 line are specifically designed for outdoor adventures.

For the S.O2 Adventure Baby Carrier, Andrew explains, “[We] wanted to do a more sleek, outdoor-oriented product, and for that one we used this really cool ripstop nylon that has an aramid fiber which is 5 times stronger than steel, so it has a really cool kind of tech, outdoorsy feel to it.”

Safety and style are essential to Andrew’s mission, but so is accessibility. He hopes that dads everywhere can benefit from Mission Critical’s baby carriers, whether they’re looking for a safe way to bring their baby on a hike or have a child with complex health needs.

Andrew recalls one dad who was able to take his child out of the ICU for the first time with help from a Mission Critical bag.

“The first time he was able to bring his child out into the world was actually in our carrier because he was able to carry the equipment that he needed on the back,” he explained.

When it comes down to it, Mission Critical is all about helping dads. “Since creating Mission Critical, the feedback’s been amazing from other dads,” Andrew said. “It’s really been a fun journey.”
