Over the past few days, Harry and Meghan have been in London, working through plans to step back from their positions as senior members of the royal family and to "carve out a progressive new role within this institution."

But this evening, T&C has confirmed that their 8-month-old son, Archie Harrison, is back in Canada, and Meghan will return to him soon. At this point it is unclear if Prince Harry will also be traveling back to Canada in the days to come. He currently has a royal engagement on the books for next Thursday, January 16.

Both People and Harper's Bazaar are reporting that Archie was left in the care of Meghan's close friend Jessica Mulroney and a nanny while Harry and Meghan have been in London.

Yesterday, the Sussexes reportedly blindsided the rest of the royal family with the announcement that they planned to split their time moving forward between the U.K. and North America. (While they did not clarify where they plan to reside in North America, Canada seems like an obvious choice for the royal couple, considering its position within the Commonwealth, and Meghan's familiarity with the country, having lived there in her pre-royal life.)

Buckingham Palace issued a terse response to the news.

"Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage," read the official statement. "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The BBC also reported that Buckingham Palace is "understood to be 'disappointed'" by the situation.

But today, the Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William "directed their teams to work together at pace with governments and The Sussex Household to find workable solutions."

“They’re feeling confident,” a friend of Harry and Meghan's told royal reporter Omid Scobie. “Harry and Meghan are aware that they’ll be criticized, perhaps even vilified, for taking control of their lives but creating a positive future for themselves and their family has always been their priority.”
