Ayesha Curry is just like us — starting a fitness journey isn’t the easiest thing and often, life gets in the way. But once the 33-year-old lifestyle mogul’s mind and body were aligned to make changes, it shifted the health and wellness of her entire family. And the mom of three understands all too well that it isn’t always easy to get to that place where you put yourself first.

“I had three babies over the past 10 years,” Curry tells SheKnows. “I would go through the process of, ‘Okay I’m going to get in shape but we’re planning to have another baby, so why should I do it?’ I would be so good for a while and then fall off like everybody.” Her situation is relatable to a lot of parents, who are in the throes of the early child-rearing days. However, once she and her NBA star husband Stephen Curry decided that their family was complete, she knew she was ready to make her health a priority. “Now that we’ve kind of entered a different chapter of our lives, I feel like my body is mine again,” she says.

Yet the Sweet July founder wasn’t interested in a quick fix because she wanted to be mindful of the lessons, she was teaching her children, daughters Riley, 10, and Ryan, 7, and son Canon, 4. Curry wanted to do it in an “approachable and long-lasting way” that would work for her entire family. That means the word “diet” was thrown out the window in their house because she knows her kids “are watching” every move she makes. “I cannot say I’m on a diet or I cannot say, ‘I’m watching what I eat.’ I try to make sure that I don’t use those terms around them,” she shares. Instead, I’m like, ‘Today, I’m going to have like a healthier meal.’ It’s rephrasing things that way in front of them because they really are watching.”

When it comes to fitness, Curry is not trying to keep up with her husband. She’s long since realized that as an elite athlete, his body has different needs than hers. “I’m so competitive and for whatever reason, it took me the longest time to realize that I’m not a top athlete,” she laughs. “There is no reason why I need to be doing the workouts he’s doing or having the supplements and the protein powders that he uses.” Curry also notes that pressure was self-imposed, “Steph literally doesn’t care — he’s loved me in every form that I’ve been.”(We love a supportive king!) Once she learned to “release all of that,” she began “seeing the change” that she wanted in her overall health. “I need to have a more relaxed approach to the type of workouts I’m doing,” Curry says. That’s why you will find her paddle-boarding, hiking, or at a Pilates class — she likes to mix it up because the treadmill at the gym isn’t always the right vibe. She says with a smile in her voice, “I have the attention span of a goldfish so monotony in workouts doesn’t work for me.”

To keep her on track in 2023, Curry is teaming up with MyFitnessPal, the nutrition and food tracking app, for their 14-day Jumpstart Your Health Challenge beginning Jan. 2. It’s designed to help users stay focused on their health and wellness goals — and the app and participation in the challenge are free. “When the new year rolls around we often say, ‘I’m going to change my life’ and we almost always fail, right,” she jokes. “What’s so special about this challenge is that it’s approachable and easy. It’s about little steps and reminders to create lasting change and new habits in your life. Curry is looking forward to joining her fans and followers on MyFitnessPal because she knows she will need “a little bit of a reset” after the holidays.

Curry, who is the author of the two best-selling cookbooks including The Full Plate: Flavor-Filled, Easy Recipes for Families With No Time and a Lot to Do, will be sharing her favorite recipes — think naked turkey and smashed avocado burger, a tropical smoothie, and grilled chicken with mango corn salsa — and meal-prep tips on the app, too. She is also exploring “more plant-based protein” in the new year and, she hopes others will join her 2023 journey.

Besides kicking off 2023 with the Jumpstart Your Health Challenge with MyFitnessPal, Curry is setting herself up with a strong theme for the year ahead: internal growth. “I want to feel more comfortable in my skin and feel more confident in my flaws and kind of owning them,” she shares proudly. “I’m almost in my mid-30s, so they say you start feeling that around this time. I’m definitely getting there… I’m definitely getting there.”
