Ayesha Curry puts a very controversial ingredient in her guac, and we don't know how to feel

Cooking is an art, not a science, but there are some recipes that just don’t need a lot of creative interpretation. In our humble opinions, guacamole is one such food. A good guac just isn’t that complicated: You mix avocados, onions, cilantro, lime juice, salt, and pepper, and maybe some tomatoes or jalapeños if you’re feeling fancy. Obviously, this isn’t the definitive guide to guac-making, though, and some people (aka Antoni Porowski from Queer Eye) insist that you should add Greek yogurt to the mix, which, sure. We were surprised and a little unsettled to learn, however, that Ayesha Curry puts cheese in her guacamole. But we’re willing to hear her out.

Curry stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show on June 5th to do a little cooking and talk about her upcoming digital series Fempire with Ayesha Curry. She whipped up some delicious treats for DeGeneres and Jennifer Aniston, another guest on the show that day. Curry started by mixing a mango-lemonade cocktail that sounded pretty delicious. Then, she shared her take on chips and guacamole.

The recipe that Curry used calls for a lot of mix-ins, which seemed standard at first. She added minced garlic and red onion and mashed both into the avocado. So far so good. But then she added cheese. We’re not talking Pepper Jack, either.

No, Curry uses Havarti cheese in her guac.

Both DeGeneres and Aniston were visibly surprised by this ingredient, exclaiming “Whoa!” at the exact same time.

Curry finished off the recipe with a standard squeeze of lime juice and some salt and pepper. But we’re still a little hung up on that Havarti.

See Curry make her cheesy guac for yourself in the video below.

The guac-making starts around 2:21.

To be fair, we haven’t tried Curry’s guac recipe before. Maybe cheese adds a little pizzazz to our favorite dip? After all, cheese and guacamole are both independently delicious, so we can kind of understand why they might go well together. We might need some time to process the idea of cheese in guac. What do you think?
