Marvel Cinematic Universe fans will know that Odin (Anthony Hopkins) had what appeared to be an infinity gauntlet in his possession.

However, when Hela (Cate Blanchett) comes across it during the events of Thor: Ragnarok, walking through his vault, she declares the item as a fake.

A Reddit user has come up with a pretty smart theory which could possibly explain the existence of Odin's gauntlet – and it ties to one particular part of Avengers: Infinity War.

"I think I figured out why Odin had a fake gauntlet in his vault," the post said.

"When Thor approached Eitri to create Stormbreaker, the concept of the weapon already existed. I think it's possible that when Thanos approached him to make the gauntlet, the concept for it already existed too, as someone else had asked him for one before: Odin.

"Odin wanted to harness the power of the stones and had a replica made to see what the finished product would look like, but upon becoming peaceful he decided against using it, much to Hela's disappointment.

"He put the replica in his vault as a way to remind himself not to get too carried away with his power. This would explain why Hela knows it's a fake, and announces it so proudly and dismissively."

It could be that Marvel will be content never to address the story behind that gauntlet – which began life as a throwaway Thor Easter egg – but it's an interesting theory nonetheless to think about.
