James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has officially overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the fourth highest-grossing film in history.

According to reports, the sci-fi sequel has earned a whopping $2.075 billion USD at the global box office to surpass The Force Awakens' $2.064 billion USD run in 2015. This effectively makes Cameron the director of three of the four highest-grossing movies of all time, thanks to the original Avatar's earnings of $2.92 billion USD and Titanic's $2.2 billion USD earnings; the only title not helmed by Cameron is Avengers: Endgame with $2.79 billion USD.

Avatar: The Way of Water was also recently nominated for best picture, production design, sound and visual effects at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Elsewhere in entertainment, HBO has renewed The Last of Us for a second season.
