Avalanche Patrol Dog Sets Bar For Dedicated Resort Skiers Everywhere

Alpine Patrol Dogs posted a new video to Instagram, and it has everyone feeling some type of way.

The account (probably someone with thumbs, so not the dog in question) captioned the video, "Milton knows the early bird gets the worm." Watch below (it may redirect you to Instagram due to the music)!

Milton even looks like he needs his morning coffee, or a puppuchino, as he rides the lift.

Alpine Avalanche Rescue Foundation, or AARF for short, recently had one of their own in the running for Ikon's Bark Brackett.

Thunder, a fun-loving (but hard-working) rescue dog from Alpine Meadows made the bracket to represent Palisades/Alpine, CA. See below.

But between the Ikon cuteness contests and making silly videos about getting first chair, we have a lot to thank avalanche dogs for.

When avalanches do occur, these canines are on the front lines of the search and rescue parties.

According to the American Kennel Club, avalanche dogs are needed at resorts such as Jackson Hole, WY, two to three times a year on average.

Avalanche dogs train by their handlers putting the search in the context of a game. Making things progressively harder for the dog to find the human scent (first on the snow, then in a hole, then beneath layers of snow) the dogs learn to dig. This, then, gets put to the real test in situations of urgency.

Time is of the essence, and dogs ensure that no matter how many humans venture out to find those buried, there are a couple extra noses on the case.
