The One Thing

Our series The One Thing is a Sparknotes version of the products, rituals, and moments your favorite celebrities and influencers swear by—their go-tos, must-haves, and can’t-live-withouts. So go ahead—take a brief, intimate peek into the lives of your favorites through the things (and people, and moments) they hold dear.

Ava Phillippe may have been born in September, but she absolutely thrives in the spring. The self-described "twenty-something orchid child"'s Instagram is full of florals, fresh fruits, and memories of fearless beauty experimentation over the years—like rose gold hair and decadent Bridgerton eyeshadow—and while she's in a softer era these days, it's by no means boring and feels perfect for the new season. On a press day for Vince Camuto's new Wonderbloom Eau de Parfum ($98)—Phillippe is the face—she looked ethereal in a pale pink dress (that she'd swap for a fuchsia jumpsuit that evening), a bouncy blowout, and the infectious Southern charm that one only gets from growing up with Reese Witherspoon for a mom.

A rising beauty and style icon, Phillippe is wise beyond her years with an ultra-cool reputation, but the tips she has to offer are refreshingly simple—proving that maybe all you need is a consistent routine and a positive mindset to have a rejuvenating spring. Read on for the star's spring favorites, from her go-to products to her favorite trends and the best piece of beauty advice she's ever received from her mom.

The One Thing She Looks For in a Fragrance

"[When I’m looking for a fragrance], I want something that's subtle. When I walk into a room, I like when someone notices but it's not overpowering, and it makes me feel in a good mood, confident, and ready to take on the world. From the get-go, when I first smelled Wonderbloom, it was very feminine and floral. It feels like a very light, everyday burst of joy."

The One Outfit She'd Style with Wonderbloom

"When wearing the fragrance, I would definitely pair it with something pink, which I don't shy away from. I'd probably also go for some sort of fun texture detail, like a ruffle or something flowy. I love an outfit that's very feminine and light, but also fun."

The Scent Memory That Lives in Her Mind Forever

"I have distinct memories of my mom on the weekends making breakfast. She was always banging the pots and pans around, and that's when we knew to wake up. That scent of bacon and eggs and pancakes filling the house on Sunday."

The One Spring Trend She's Most Excited to Try

"I don't really get on to the trends as much as I would hope, but I think for summer especially looking at all the crochet [pieces trending right now], that looks really fun. I'm keeping it easy, breezy, light, and feminine."

Her One Current Beauty Struggle

"I did curtain bangs for a really long time and loved them, but now I'm trying to grow them out. It's that eternal struggle of getting bangs and then not wanting them anymore. But it's okay, we'll get there—just going to work on it and resist the urge to cut them."

The One Beauty Look That Always Makes Her Feel Like Herself

"Doing my makeup is huge for me in making me feel like myself. I'm lucky that I don't have to do too much with my hair, but I do love a nice lip and mascara. Then, I'm ready to go—fresh and minimal."

The One Beauty Product That's Always in Her Bag

"Lip balm, for sure. I've been really loving the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm—that’s a trend that I did hop on. I like the vanilla one, and then I can add a tint on top if I want. If I can fit a little travel fragrance in my bag, that's always good, too, for a little extra spritz as I go throughout my day."

Her Favorite Styling Tricks to Bring an Outfit Together

"I love when the shoes match the bag. It always works for me. Or when the hardware on the purse matches the hardware on the belt, which matches the earrings."

The Best Beauty Advice She's Gotten from Her Mom

"My favorite one that she's always said—it's a big Southern saying—is 'Pretty is as pretty does.' You're only as beautiful as you are on the inside and the way you treat people. I think that's a huge part of beauty."

The One Skincare Product She Can't Live Without

"Sunscreen is a big one for me. I use the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen ($22) because I like the way it sits on my face, and it doesn't clog my pores. Sunscreen is hugely important for everyone."

The One Thing She Does Every Morning

"Every morning, I definitely get outside. I think sunshine and being in nature is a huge mood lifter and a good way to start your day. I have a dog—he's a rescue border collie mix, so he's a whole bunch of things. He's lovely and he's my best friend."

Her Nightly Ritual to Wind Down

"I think nighttime is a really important time for your skin, and also to wind down and get ready for sleep is important. I usually make a cup of tea and make sure I get all my makeup off, wash my face, and do my skincare—maybe I exfoliate a little bit, then moisturizer and eye cream. I keep it simple, though: I don't want to pack on too much. Then, I try to get in bed at a good time."

The Best Beauty Tip She's Picked Up on Set

"This isn't necessarily a tip, but when you feel beautiful on the inside, you exude that, so the confidence that you have within comes out. I think it's hugely important for women and girls to embody what's on the inside—your outward appearance is only part of it."

The One Thing She Thinks Gets Lost in Social Media Culture

"Your beauty is not static. In this age of social media, you get a static photo and you think, 'Oh, that's how I look all the time,' and there's so much that can’t be communicated through that. It’s important to remember that."
