Authorities Have Identified Surfer Found Dead in California Waters

The surfer tragically found dead in the water off of Santa Barbara last week has been identified as 68-year-old Guy Brian Wright, according to Noozhawk.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office confirmed the surfer's identity with Noozhawk over the weekend and said Wright's next of kin had been notified.

On December 27, Wright's body had been found after another surfer saw a surfboard floating in a kelp bed offshore, prompting a search of the area.

Noozhawk posted the story above on Saturday and captioned it:

After Wright's body was found, firefighters and other emergency personnel responded at about 12:15 p.m. to the incident below Mesa Lane.

His body was brought back to shore where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Friday, the Santa Barbara City Fire Department confirmed the incident with Surfer, but could not share any additional information.

On Saturday, Noozhawk reported:

"The Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol was advised that a commercial fishing vessel was coming into the harbor with Wright’s body, according to Capt. Nathan Alldredge, acting harbor operations manager.

"The boat was met at the dock by firefighters and sheriff’s deputies, and Wright was confirmed dead by paramedics, Alldredge said.

"It is likely Wright succumbed to a medical condition, Alldredge said, but the cause and manner of death were under investigation by the sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau."

Rest in peace.
