Yesterday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrated their son's first birthday by releasing a truly adorable video of Meghan reading to Archie. And what's more, they partnered with Save the Children UK to make sure the moment did some good.

While Meghan and Archie's reading session was objectively lovely, Something Borrowed author Emily Giffin hopped on Instagram to slam the Duchess in a series of unkind and unnecessary posts, writing that Meghan was "unmaternal," "phony," and "uncomfortable to watch."

The posts caused a lot of understandable backlash, and Emily has since taken it to Instagram to explain herself—though mostly it just sounds like she's making excuses. Her account has since been made private, but according to Us Weekly she wrote:

“Over recent months my feelings about BOTH Harry and Meghan changed. But I can say from the bottom of my heart that my criticism of Meghan has never had anything to do with her race. Further, I understood why she wanted to leave the monarchy and carve out her own path. I do, however, find fault with the way BOTH she and Harry handled things, and those feelings bled over in later posts, including the ones today.”

She added, "I can see how some of my posts may have felt mean-spirited, and could be construed as having racial undertones. It was not my intent, but I understand that intent and impact are two very different things. And I am truly sorry for that negative impact.”

Again, Meghan's reading session with Archie was absolutely lovely and placed emphasis on an important cause. If you'd like to support Meghan, go ahead and donate to Save the Children UK in honor of Archie's birthday.
