A new transatlantic route is coming to New England this summer thanks to Austrian Airlines.

This July, the Austrian flag carrier will inaugurate flying between Boston and Vienna for the summer 2024 season. The route will be offered on a year-round basis, with up to 6 weekly flights.

“We are excited to announce Boston as a new and highly attractive destination,” Austrian Airlines Chief Commercial Officer, Michael Trestl, in a statement. “This expansion enhances our long-haul offering and strengthens the Vienna hub. Boston’s world-renowned universities, including Harvard and MIT, business connections, and the city’s unparalleled charm make it a fascinating and enticing travel destination. Additionally, it will be even easier for visitors and tourists from New England to come to Vienna in the future.”

The flight time between Vienna and Boston spans nearly 9 hours. Austrian will depart Boston at 5:10 p.m. and arrive at Vienna at 7:25 am, while the return flight from Vienna will leave at 10:40 am and arrive at Boston by 1:50 p.m.

Austrian will operate this flight with its Boeing 767-300 aircraft that can seat up to 211 passengers, arranged with business class, premium economy, and economy seats. Tickets for the new route are on sale on Austrian’s website.

The airline first announced this route back in 2019, but the service never materialized due to the pandemic. Come July, Boston will be the first new U.S. destination for Austrian Airlines in several years, joining existing routes to Chicago, Los Angeles, New York-JFK, Newark, and Washington, D.C.

Austrian Airlines is a smaller carrier centered around its main hub at Vienna International Airport but is owned by the Lufthansa Group. This summer, Lufthansa also announced a major U.S. expansion with new routes to its major Frankfurt hub, including Raleigh-Durham and Minneapolis.
