Austinites celebrate ‘La Mujer’

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) brought together the Austin Latina Community to celebrate the event ‘La Mujer’ on Sunday.

‘La Mujer,’ which translates to ‘the woman,’ featured an assortment of dances, singing, food, and artwork. One of the event attendees, Sol Bautista, said it was incredible to see how women were celebrated at the event.

“As an Mexican immigrant, it was amazing to be invited to celebrate with the Mexican American Cultural Center,” Bautista said. “It’s [great] to see how many amazing women are doing important work in their community — in English and in Spanish.”

Joseline Perez, a vendor at the event, said she found the event hit close to her heritage.

“My parents are from Mexico, so I’m Mexican American,” Perez said. “I would like my business to cater towards my culture.”

MACC Representative Olivia Tamzarian echoed both Bautista and Perez’s thoughts, emphasizing the importance of celebrating such events.

“There aren’t enough events that celebrate Latinas and women of color,” Tamzarian said. “This is a really important opportunity for us to highlight some women in our community.”
