Austin Butler’s voice coach on why he still sounds like Elvis two years after filming wrapped

From his enviable relationship with Kaia Gerber to his award-winning portrayal of Elvis Presley, Austin Butler is the talk of the town (read: world) lately. But, perhaps even more attention-grabbing than all that is his voice. Yep, who knew someone's voice could be such a topic of conversation.
ICYMI, last year Austin starred in the titular role in Baz Lurhmann's Elvis and fans were overwhelmed by how well the young actor played the Hollywood legend – with his performance earning him the Best Actor win at last week's Golden Globes. But, despite filming for Elvis wrapping almost two years ago, Austin noticeably still sounds a lot like his on-screen character.
"I feel like Austin Butler is physically incapable of turning the Elvis voice off now. Like when you're little and you make silly faces and your parents are like 'if you keep making that face it’s gonna get stuck like that'," one fan said of Austin's new voice, with another tweeting: "People just need to accept the fact Austin Butler's body is now host to the spirit of Elvis Presley. The voice is never going away."
So, why does Austin still sound like Elvis?
Speaking to ABC Gold Coast, Austin's voice coach revealed the answer to that question. "Because of COVID shutdowns, he was working on it all the time and it’s difficult to switch off something you’ve spent so much focus [and] time on," Dr Irene Bartlett explained, echoing what Austin has said previously about his dedication to the role, which meant he didn't see his loved ones for three years.
"When you've got an iconic voice like that it's really difficult," Dr Bartlett added. "It's very easy to be an impersonator because what you do is literally copy the sounds and the problem with that for someone like Austin is that it would not be sustainable."
"I feel sorry people are saying that, you know, it's still acting [but] he's actually taken [the voice] on board," she said of Austin's current voice. "I don't know how long that will last, or if it's going to be there forever."
As for what Austin thinks of his new voice, on the Golden Globes red carpet he said: "I don't think about it. I don't think that I sound like him still. But I guess I must because I hear it a lot."
"You know, I often liken it to someone who lives in another country for a long time," he went on. "I had three years where [the role] was my only focus in life, so I'm sure there will always be pieces of my DNA that will always be linked in that way."
