Everybody wants good neighbors. In these trying times, having a strong community to fall back on is particularly important.

But where in this vast and diverse country can you find the best neighbors? This week, storage company Neighbor shared a list of the Top 25 Most Neighborly Cities, which identifies the locations where people are looking out for each other, doing favors for one another, and “generally acting like good neighbors.”

The rankings took four “neighborly” characteristics into account: charitable giving, formal volunteering, informal volunteering (doing favors for friends, family, and neighbors), and community well-being (which came from a study that surveyed people on whether they felt safe, happy, and proud of their home communities.)

And the winner is? Augusta, Georgia!

According to Neighbor, the home of the iconic Masters tournament took the top stop for a number of reasons. To start, 87.5% of itemized tax returns filed by Augusta residents included charitable giving, with an average amount of $7,000. The study also found that nearly 25% of residents put in hours volunteering for an organization they believe in, with almost 9% doing some “informal volunteering.” And to top it all off, 11.2% of workers in Augusta carpool, above the national average of 9%.

“We’re excited to be recognized as such a friendly and inviting city to live in and visit,” Bennish Brown, President and CEO, Augusta CVB, said in a statement. “This recognition confirms what our research has revealed as one of our most significant unique selling positions—the friendliness of our residents. It further reinforces why tourists want to ‘Come See Augusta.’”
