If you've always dreamed of becoming a master brewer, you might want to take a look at getting an actual master's in brewing degree from Auburn University.

According to Alabama news site Al.com, Auburn is the first in the nation to offer a master of science degree in brewing science and operations. It's a natural expansion of the university's two-year-old certificate program in brewing, which will continue to be offered.

The new degree program is being taught online through Auburn's Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management, with classes like "Brewing Microbiology" and "Applied Engineering in Brewing." Students also will get a taste of what it's like to work at a brewery with the "Brewing Practicum," where they undertake a real-world project.

"A brewer is not only someone who's making great things to drink, but they're a chemist, they're a microbiologist, and a lot of times they're an engineer," said Clark Danderson, director of brewing science and operations, in a video posted on X.

The new master's degree is attracting full-time workers who love craft beer or have experimented with home brewing, Danderson told Al.com. They're taught by brewers from New Realm Brewing Company, which has opened a seven-barrel teaching lab and brewhouse on campus that is open to the public. (New Realm's original location is in Atlanta, and there are additional locations at Virginia Beach and Charleston.)

New Realm expects to hire some of the program's graduates, who will be well-equipped to brew something tasty.

We're getting thirsty just thinking about it.
