Atelier Pendhapa Launches Collection with Hermès Sister Brand Métaphores

London- and Singapore-based architecture and furniture design studio Atelier Pendhapa partners with Hermès sister brand Métaphores for a new luxury furniture collection. The line, dubbed Akar, includes nine pieces of mahogany and teak furniture upholstered in horsehair Le Crin fabric handwoven by Métaphores.
The intricate and time-consuming process of weaving the horse-hair fabric was carried out by Métaphores’ artisans in a worksop in Challes in France’s Sarthe region, heir to the Le Crin patent filed in 1787. The furnishings’ solid mahogany and teak woods were fashioned at Atelier Pendhapa’s studio in Indonesia.
“Pushing the technical boundaries of solid wood making, we looked at ways to form the material as a thread woven together with the horsehair,” said Antonin Hautefort and Ignatio Tenggara, founders, Atelier Pendhapa.
The Akar collection includes a variety of seating options, including dining chairs, benches, swivel chairs and plush upholstered chairs. Several of the chairs feature curved-back frames with upholstered seats. Side tables are available, as well. The pieces come in natural wood finishes, as well as a high-gloss black finish.
Métaphores, which is a part of Hermès textile division, specializes in Verel de Belval silk for furnishings, along with Le Crin handwoven horse hair fabrics.
The line is now available at high-end online furnishings retailer Invisible Collection.
