At Chanel, The Show Goes On Without Kendall and Gigi

Karl Lagerfeld is often called a fashion prophet, mixing streetwear with couture and DJs with grande dames before anyone else in the industry. But the theme of his show—invitations with severed cable cords, a set made from blinking modems and screens with fractured data chains—seemed eerily prescient given Kim Kardashian’s sudden departure from Paris. (This is, after all, the woman most famous for breaking the internet.)

As rumors continued to fly about how Kardashian West was attacked (Isis and “Bling Ring” alumni were the crowd favorites), security measures were the tightest they’d been all week: metal detectors, extra police, and even x-ray machines for the guests’ designer purses were in use. “Is this because of Kim?” Ellen von Unwerth asked friends in the Grand Palais lobby.

In the front row, security was predictably White House level. Courtney Love and her daughter Frances Bean were kept sealed off by two large guards and various publicists, while Lily Rose Depp took Snapchats with seat mates before dissolving into a riot of Asian bloggers with selfie sticks. As she was “rescued” by serious-faced men in sharp suits, she giggled and flashed a dazzling grin. It’s going to be fun watching her become a movie star.

The show itself was the fun kind of gorgeous, with pleated laser prints and stiff-brimmed baseball hats in Pokémon shades of yellow and neon blue. Flat shoes and camellia flower charms on jewelry and hats dotted the collection. And as predicted by the flurry of tabloid reports chronicling the Kardashian family’s French exodus, no Jenners or Hadids were dressed in the making of this collection… or were they?

Before Arizona Muse and Lineisy Monteiro hit the catwalk, two models walked the show wearing white Storm Trooper masks and boots, never revealing their faces to the crowd. “I bet that was Gigi and Kendall,” laughed Tumblr’s fashion director Valentine Uhsovski after the show. Alas, investigating that theory proved fruitless: all entrances backstage were blocked by multiple guards. Extra security, we were told.
