Aspiring artists vie for space at Myrtle Beach art museum as part of annual competition

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Local high school artists were given the opportunity to have their artwork professionally judged at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum on Saturday.

Of the more than 220 submissions from 10 schools across two counties, 88 were chosen to be part of the museum’s collection.

Paul Yanko, an artist for more than 30 years, responsible for judging the entries.

“Thankfully, there are different categories to offer acknowledgment to the student artists. And so I felt like that made the job much easier to have categories in 2D, 3D, photography, things like that.”

There were many types of artwork — from paintings to sculptures and even a handmade dress.

“The best work, some of the strongest work, transcends the assignment. It really has a life of its own beyond whatever the instructor initially assigned in the class. It moves from being just a project to something the student might have some real ownership in,” Yanko said.

Among those who attended this year’s event were long-time sponsors Sandy Hubbard and Tom Logan.

Yanko will have his own exhibition later this fall and the museum plans to continue to have their high school art show.
