Three years ago actor Ashton Kutcher was unable to walk. A month ago he ran the New York City marathon in 3:54:01.

“I woke up one day and was having vision issues, could hardly see,” Kutcher, 44, said during the premiere episode of the Paramount+ health series, The Checkup with Dr. David Agus. “Knocked out my hearing, which threw off my equilibrium, my balance, and I couldn’t walk.”

Kutcher was diagnosed with vasculitis, a condition that causes inflammation of the blood vessels, which reduces blood flow. That restriction can result in organ and tissue damage.

In Kutcher’s case, the condition was life-threatening, Kutcher’s physician, Agus, told Entertainment Tonight.

There are many types of vasculitis, but according to NBC News, Kutcher didn’t disclose which type he had.

In August, the That 70’s Show actor tweeted, “Before there are a bunch of rumors/ chatter/ whatever out there. Yes, I had a rare vasculitis episode 3yrs ago. (Autoimmune flair up) I had some impairments hear, vision, balance issues right after. I fully recovered. All good. Moving on. See you at the 2022 NY Marathon w/Thorn.”

Kutcher founded Thorn, which protects children from child abuse, and his New York City marathon efforts raised more than $1 million.

“Part of it is this mental thing I have around achieving a full comeback from waking up at the hospital. I was unable to walk, and I was like, ‘Wait a second, if I can go from not being able to walk to running a marathon in a three-year span, then I can let that be a part of the past and be like, I’m back. I’m good,’” Kutcher said during The Checkup.

Since Kutcher’s sub-four marathon finish, he’s been training his kids for a 5K.
