Ashanti and her music may’ve risen to fame in the early 2000s, but she’s in her prime right now. At 42, the songstress and actress is more comfortable in her skin than ever, and it’s all thanks to her commitment to self-care and staying true to who she is, despite the world changing around her. In a new interview with Byrdie, she discussed aging and how it has impacted her confidence.

“As you evolve and age, you become more comfortable in your skin. I might put on a bikini a little more often now than when I first came out,” she said. “A lot of the confidence comes from within .... for me, it’s just about staying true to myself and accentuating the good things I love about myself. I’m proud to be happy with who I am.”

Taking care of herself from the inside out is essential to maintaining that confidence, she explained. After all, she’s just as busy now as she was in her early career—most recently having starred in VH1’s A New Diva’s Christmas Carol—so it would be easy for those practices to slip away. But she’s adamant about setting boundaries.

“With the position I’m in right now, I have to work hard and make some sacrifices. So, boundaries are important,” she said. “I can do a bunch of interviews, but when I’m down to three or four hours of sleep, I have to [carve out some self-care time]. Creating a balance when working hard and going after all these amazing opportunities is essential. You have to be cognizant of your mental health, get enough sleep, drink enough water, and eat the right foods.”

In her case, that includes limiting meat where possible. She currently follows a pescatarian diet and is “trying to go vegetarian now,” she said. And when she doesn’t eat as intentionally as she would like, she notices.

“What goes into your body should go hand-in-hand with your beauty routine,” she explained. “I have been on tour for months, and tour food is not good, but I am back on track with juicing and incorporating healthy food and exercise into my routine.”

Most importantly, at 42, Ashanti’s mental health is in a good place. And that’s a significant barometer for her overall wellness and self-esteem. “My mental health is amazing,” she said. “I’m in a state of just being super grateful. I’m so blessed, and my heart is full.”
