Asbury Park cops arrest 14-year-olds armed with handguns and ammunition

ASBURY PARK - Two 14-year-olds armed with handguns were arrested Monday in the 300 block of Prospect Avenue, according to city police.

One teen is from Asbury Park and the other is from Lakewood, said police Sgt. Michael Casey, a spokesman for the Asbury Park Police Department on Wednesday.

Both were charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a defaced firearm and possession of prohibited ammunition, Casey said.

They were taken to an unspecified youth detention facility pending a detention hearing, he said.

Police officers approached a group of teens about 2 p.m. Monday after receiving an anonymous tip that at least one of them was armed with a firearm. A description of the suspects were provided and police were dispatched to the scene, where the juveniles were located, the sergeant said.

Two handguns and ammunition were recovered during a subsequent investigation and the teens were processed at Asbury Park police headquarters, he said.
