Arts Council moves back to downtown Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — It’s moving day for the Arts Council out from the Kern County Museum and back to downtown Bakersfield stronger than ever.

“We’re trying to develop what we call the East Arts District, and then there’ll be the West Arts District, which will be the Fox Theater, and the BAA, all that, on the west side of Chester,” said Jeanette Richardson, executive director of the Arts Council of Kern.

It is a major group effort to bring back the artistic hub of Bakersfield.

“I think we’re seeing Bakersfield wanting to be developed as an arts destination so, as the Arts Council of Kern, we really want to help with that,” Richardson said.

“Maybe for a moment there we were behind on being pioneers of art, but we are of the mindset that we can pick that back up,” said Sam Sharpe, with the Arts Council of Kern. “We are going to be pioneers again.”

And anyone can be part of it.

“If you want to start doing art, it is so simple, pick up a pencil, pick up a crayon, just do it,” Sharpe said.

“Art is for everybody, there’s not a single person in the arts,” Richardson said. “You can do something to transform your life, even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush, do it.”
