Bazaar’s 2022 Icons issue celebrates a rising generation of stars—people 30 years old or younger—who are making an impact on the world through their ideas and their art. Here, we talk to artist Jadé Fadojutimi, who paints large-scale abstracted works that often have elements of fashion woven in.

What does the word icon mean to you?

Mastering the art of being yourself. For me, that means confronting your trauma, being honest with yourself, and celebrating yourself every day.

When do you feel the most iconic?

When I’m in my studio painting every day. I don’t even think about painting because it’s just the act of loving yourself on the canvas. At some point in my life, I’d love to start a foundation that helps children and students, and anyone that needs help, because I think we can all support each other in some way.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

It’s my own advice, and I take it every day: Live life like it’s Christmas because there’s no reason not to celebrate every day.
