Arnold Schwarzenegger Gives a ‘Twins’ Sequel Update

Sorry, Twins fans: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito won’t be delivering that long-gestating sequel after all.

“No, it’s not going to happen,” the action star reveals in the new Parade cover story of the follow-up to the smash 1988 comedy.

As he explains it, plans changed after original director Ivan Reitman—who also directed Schwarzenegger in the 1990 hit Kindergarten Cop—died in his sleep in 2022. “When he passed away, his son [Jason] made it very clear that he does not like the idea and doesn’t want to do it,” he adds. “The Reitmans had the rights to the project.” (FYI, Jason Reitman did take over another one of his dad’s franchises and directed 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.)

Twins, which grossed more than $200 million worldwide, starred Schwarzenegger and DeVito as mismatched products of a genetic experiment. After being separated at birth, Schwarzenegger’s physically perfect and innocent Julian seeks out his long-lost twin brother, Vincent (DeVito) — who turns out to be a womanizing small-time crook. It marked The Terminator star’s first comedy.

The end of the movie saw Julius and Vincent getting married and having twins of their own. The sequel, tentatively titled Triplets, was originally set to star Eddie Murphy as the third brother. Murphy dropped out of the project in 2021 and was replaced by Tracy Morgan thereafter.

Though Schwarzenegger and DeVito never got the sequel off the ground, they did reteam in the 1994 comedy Junior. Also directed by Reitman, it chronicled the exploits of an Austrian research scientist who agrees to undergo a male pregnancy. (DeVito played an OB-GYN.) It got mixed reviews and grossed $100 million.

But while Triplets is lost, Schwarzenegger promises that he and his longtime friend are going to reunite soon on a new film. “We’re currently having a script written for us both that is kind of like Triplets, but it’s a different story,” he says. “It’s going to be very, very fun and entertaining. People are going to love it.”
