Turns out, selling 99-cent shoes will, in fact, draw a crowd. Who would’ve thunk?! A collaboration between Adidas and AriZona Iced Tea caused some chaos today when a New York City pop-up was shut down by police for safety concerns.
The shoes, which come in familiar teal and pink shades, were being sold for 99 cents, a nod to the can’s price. One pair even had a “Great Buy 99 cent” label stamped on the shoe’s tongue. As far as brand collabs go, this one is pretty cute.
Given the price, the shoes were obviously limited in quantity. They were meant to be sold at a pop-up shop in downtown New York July 18 and 19. However, the event drew major crowds, leading police to shut it down before it officially opened 11 a.m. Thursday.
A tweet from AriZona Iced Tea said this: “Thanks to our loyal fans that came out to support our partnership with Adidas. Due to overwhelming demand and safety concerns, the NYPD shut down our pop-up. We sincerely apologize to all our fans that waited in line. We are actively working to remedy the situation.”

Some fans were in line as early as 3 a.m. to get their hands on a pair of the shoes, per responses to AriZona’s tweet. Those who waited expressed frustrations over how the event was handled and confusion over whether tickets or wristbands were needed to get into the pop-up shop.
There’s no word yet on how the shoes will be sold or if the pop-up will be able to open tomorrow. We’ll update this story once more information is available.
