Like the statuesque tulips that signify the glorious start of spring, Aries kicks off the zodiac calendar, ruling the skies from March 21 to April 19. “Being the first sign of the zodiac makes Aries the motivator that sparks every plan into action,” says astrologer Lisa Stardust. This fire sign is governed by Mars, the planet of passion, and represented by the courageous, strong-willed ram. “Mars fuels our confidence. Everything Aries does in life is done with passion and enthusiasm,” adds Sanctuary astrologer Lauren Ash.

VERANDA conjured Aries’ celestial spirit with the help of Birmingham-based florist Mark Thompson. To bring the sign’s floral horoscope (or as we like to call it “floriscope”) to life, we looked to the bright, stately blooms of early spring. “Tulips are one of the first flowers to bloom in spring and stand out in the crowd with their authoritative stature, much like Aries,” says Stardust.

Vibrant yellow varieties of the flower symbolize the sign’s enthusiastic spirit in Thompson’s arrangement, where he mixed golden single tulips with pink-veined parrot tulips and buttery double tulips. “Gold is also the color most associated with Aries because of the ram’s golden fleece,” Stardust adds. Thompson also incorporated lemon-hued poppies and tall stems of yellow Alstroemeria. “The color red is also associated with Aries,” notes Ash, representing the sign’s allegiance to its fiery planetary ruler. Red azaleas, pink begonias, and blush ranunculus speak to Aries’ passionate personality.

“Because Aries is a rambunctious fire sign, they tend to make their own rules,” says Stardust. Thompson imagined a wilder, fuller arrangement erupting with energy that embodied the ambitious sign’s larger-than-life persona. He grounded the floral display in a pedestal-footed container with sculptural handles, which recall the ram’s strong horns. One might also envision a proud, confident Aries standing akimbo.
