Ariat’s New Collection Supports Chimayo Artisans

A new collection from Ariat celebrates and preserves Chimayo artistry.

The performance apparel and footwear brand launched a second collection with Centinela Traditional Arts (CTA), a family-owned and operated weaving company and tapestry gallery in Chimayo, New Mexico.

Like their first collaboration in 2022, the duo focused on designs capturing the artistry and multi-generational craftsmanship synonymous with Chimayo textiles. From prints to embroideries, the traditional textiles are referenced in a variety of ways across the collection.

The men’s assortment spans hoodies with a bold Southwestern print, a printed button-down shirt, a Western shirt with embroidered details and two zip-up vests.

The women’s line includes a distressed jean jacket with a Chimayo weave-inspired print, a wind- and water-resistant printed puffer coat and a Sherpa-lined fleece shacket. An oversized cardigan, half-zip sweater, poncho and embroidered sweatshirt enhances the collection’s cozy factor.

Ready-to-wear items like a smocked-waist dress, a high-low skirt and an asymmetrical top feature an all-over Chimayo print. A classic snap shirt with Chimayo weaving-inspired details nods to Ariat’s Western roots.

The Chimayo collection includes printed sneakers and Western boots with Chimayo-pattern shafts for men and women. The women’s footwear range also offers casual slip-on footwear and ankle boots.

In honor of the partnership with CTA and to support the tradition of Chimayo weaving for future generations, Ariat donated $50,000 this year to establish the Ariat Chimayo Weaving Apprenticeship Program. Led by eighth-generation Chimayo weaver, Emily Trujillo, the initiative aims to preserve the tradition of weaving and its significance in the region by developing core skills in new weavers and supporting their personal financial goals, while also contributing to the local tourism economy.

To help sustain the program, customers can donate on Ariat’s website by rounding up their purchase total. Another 5 percent of the Chimayo collection’s online sales will support the program, with Ariat pledging up to $25,000. The fundraising ends on Sept. 30.
