Ariana Rockefeller turned to her family history for the 2022 Met Gala: She wore her grandmother Peggy Rockefeller's custom 1954 Elizabeth Arden gown designed by Ferdinando Sarmi.

"Very likely Granny wore this gown to a Chase Bank event or related to banking business during the year of 1954," Rockefeller told Vogue. (Her grandfather, David Rockefeller, was chairman of Chase Bank from 1969 to 1981.)

She worked with designer Christy Rilling to restore the ivory gown and adjust it to fit. "It's always been so fantastic to think a vintage gown will be viewed again in a modern way. For me—the epitome of sustainability," Rilling said in a statement, via People. "There were exquisite couture details inside the dress which we wouldn't ever want to change in respect for the original couture design and the look it created."

She completed her outfit with a 1920s purse that belonged to her great-grandmother Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and opera gloves. "This year is about celebrating the talents and legacies of American designers and how those talents shaped American style, In that sense, my gown is a part of this story," Rockefeller told Vogue.

Rockefeller is the great-great-granddaughter of John D. Rockefeller, an industrialist who made his fortunes during the Gilded Age. Therefore, her mere presence at the "Gilded Glamour" Met Gala was on-theme, and the fact she drew from her family history made sense.

This was Rockefeller's fourth Met Gala appearance, and her vintage outfit fits right in with her past looks, are all elegant ballgowns:
