Ariana Grande's Black Lipstick on the "Thank U, Next" Album Cover Was Inspired by Her Mom

After inspiring fans with her iconic ponytail, an all-green makeup routine, and encouraging us to wear oversized sweatshirts until the end of time, Ariana Grande's latest influence is a little more out-of-the-box. Ahead of the release of her new album, Thank U, Next the singer shared the record's captivating cover. And aside from resuming her traditional sleeping pose, the photograph also has Ariana rocking black lipstick.

The dark shade looks totally bold, and while one might presume that her inspiration for the color came from Hot Topic or Halloween, Ari revealed that she got the idea from her mom. Yep, Joan Grande's frequent use of black lipstick served as Ariana's makeup muse. The "Dangerous Woman" singer explained how in a tweet, writing, "shoutout to the baddest, most intelligent, most thoughtful and generous, strongest (like you have no idea), black lipstick wearing for no occasion mama. the og @joangrande... i hope i can be half as fly and wonderful and graceful as u are one day."

Don't worry, because it appears that Joan is totally on board with the color choice, too. She replied to Ariana with an sweet message, writing, "Oh and you are more than half, you are one and one half times greater, smarter.. and definitely nicer... I love you!!! xoxo xoxo."

Even if you won't be appearing on any upcoming album covers, you too can pull off black lipstick. As beauty experts previously told Teen Vogue, non-traditional lip colors can be worn year-round. Makeup artist Neil Scibelli explained: "Black lipstick can be worn in variety of shades, from deep berry blacks, to truer blacks. I think all skin tones can pull off the colors." And if you're worried about going too dark, Scibelli suggests mixing black with another color.

Of course, Ariana isn't the only star embracing the hue. Rihanna previously released a dark version of Fenty Beauty's Stunna Lip Paint, while Dove Cameron matched the color to her manicure. Sounds like it might be time to say "Thank U, Next" to our favorite lip colors and try a darker shade instead.
