Ariana Grande releases new song as ex-Pete Davidson calls her a 'wonderful person' on 'SNL'

It’s been a whirlwind year for Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson: dating rumors in May, matching tattoos in June, an engagement in July and — as of a few weeks ago — a permanent breakup. But as of this weekend, both the pop star and comedian seem to be moving on.For Grande, unsurprisingly, that means making music.

Making the best out of a difficult situation, the 25-year-old dropped a new song Saturday night titled “thank u next,” in which she references a number of past boyfriends, including Ricky Alvarez, Mac Miller, and Davidson. “Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh,” she sings. “Even almost got married and for Pete, I’m so thankful.”

Many speculated that the release of her song, just 30 minutes before Saturday’s episode of Saturday Night Live (in which Davidson stars) was intentional. Grande — who has yet to comment on the timing — seemed miffed last week by an “SNL” scene in which Davidson pretended to propose to the night’s musical guest, Maggie Rogers. In a since deleted tweet immediately after, Grande wrote “for someone who hates relevancy you sure love clinging to it,” then “thank u, next.”

The song, which she teased this week on Twitter, is reportedly part of a new album that Grande is working on and includes a line about her late-ex Mac Miller (who died of an overdose in September). After thanking her past boyfriends, the song goes on to suggest she’s taking some time for herself. “I met someone else, we havin’ better discussions,” she sings. “I know they say I move on too fast but this one gon’ last, cause her name is Ari, and I’m so good with that.”

As Grande’s song gained traction on Twitter, Davidson was dealing with the breakup in his own way on Saturday Night Live. After discussing the strange appearances of several midterm candidates, the 24-year-old ended his Weekend Update segment by calling out the public’s interest in his relationship with Grande.

“I know some of you are curious about the breakup, but the truth is it’s nobody’s business,” Davidson said. “Sometimes things just don’t work out. She’s a wonderful, strong person, and I wish her all the happiness in the world.”

As for her new song, fans are already suggesting it’s one of the best yet — so maybe breakups aren’t the worst thing after all.
