Ariana Grande Poked Fun at Her Ponytail on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a ponytail.

The hair evolution of Ariana Grande has truly been an enviable follicle journey, mostly because she's managed to define herself with one particular hairstyle — the high ponytail. Platinum blonde! Deep chestnut! Subdued brown! The colors may change, but the style is always there, flowing down like a waterfall in a constant state of bliss.

Ariana and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon decided it was time to poke fun at this iconic 'do, with the duo imagining the age-old question: What would happen if the ponytail suddenly came to life and gained sentience? As it turns out, it can do anything a human can do, only better: fetching drinks, taking selfies, signing autographs, picking up cellphones, and chasing down and catching the occasional purse thief or two. "Wait, stop, when did this thing with your hair start?" Jimmy implores. "I mean, I've always worn it in a ponytail," Ari replies, not seeing anything weird about it.

While the occasional blowout indeed reaches Ariana's scalp, the songstress has waxed poetic a few times about the importance of keeping her hairstyle high. "The pony has also gone through an evolution, and I'm proud of that," she said earlier this year. "Old pony? I don't know if she's that girl. But new pony? I like her. I mean, it's like a Victoria's Secret Angel without angel wings. It's still her without them, but when she's with them, it's like, 'Ohh, I get it, she's an angel.'"

Her stylist, Chris Appleton, elaborated further, essentially comparing the length of Ari's ponytail to her mood: "It's all about the placement. The higher you go, the fiercer it looks. The lower you go, the more professional or serious it looks. It can change the whole shape of your face. It can snatch your face upward and lift your eyes, or it can pull your eyes down. If you're adding hair extensions or details like braids, it gives off a different impression. That's where she gets to show her personality."
