Ariana Grande is feeling nostalgic, it seems.

Last night, the pop star released her first solo single in three years, "yes, and?" and by the morning, an official visual for the track was available for fans. The house inspired record (which samples, one of Madonna's own biggest hits, the 1990 single "Vogue") is Grande's cheeky response to her ongoing relationship with the media and critics of her personal life.

"Now, I'm so done with caring / What you think, no, I won't hide / Underneath your own projections / Or change my most authentic life," Grande sings before getting into the song's infectious chorus.

Aesthetically, the Christian Breslauer directed video pays clear homage to another '80s icon, choreographer and artist Paula Abdul. The "yes, and?" choreography, set build, and fashion (the papillon hat!) mirrors the former American Idol judge's 1988 music video for "Cold Hearted", one of Abdul's signature songs. The visual even includes buttoned up critics who sit in on the "rehearsal" to watch just like in Abdul's original video.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting new music from Grande since she began posting sneak peeks and photos of studio sessions in recent months. Aside from recording new music, the star has stayed busy finishing filming her first major starring film role as Glinda in Jon M. Chu's adaption of Wicked, set to premiere in theaters later this fall. With new music, a new movie, and a new confident mindset against her loudest critics, it's clear that Ariana Grande is ready to reemerge to the spotlight on her terms.
