Ariana Grande Opened Up About Her Turbulent Relationship With Mac Miller in Vogue Cover Story

"They didn’t see the years of work and fighting and trying, or the love and exhaustion."

Ariana Grande is speaking out about the challenging aspects of her relationship with Mac Miller for one of the first times since his death in September. In Vogue's newest cover story, Ariana opened up about the way their relationship was treated in the public eye, after his death and in the aftermath of their May 2018 breakup.

The same month that Ariana and Mac ended their two-year relationship, Mac was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence. Trolls on social media connected the arrest to the split, incorrectly blaming Ariana. At the time, Ariana tweeted back at a critic, writing, "Shaming and blaming a woman for a man’s inability to keep his s*it together is a very major problem. Let’s please stop doing that."

Speaking to Vogue, Ariana talked about that time in her life, and what it was like to be the target of social media anger after his arrest.

"People don’t see any of the real stuff that happens, so they are loud about what they think happened,” she told Vogue. "They didn’t see the years of work and fighting and trying, or the love and exhaustion. That tweet came from a place of complete defeat, and you have no idea how many times I warned him that that would happen and fought that fight, for how many years of our friendship, of our relationship. You have no idea, so you’re not allowed to pull that card, because you don’t f*cking know. That’s where that came from.”

The pop star went on to address how she's handled the loss of Mac over the past 10 months, and called her grief "all-consuming." She noted that their relationship wasn't perfect, but said Mac "was the best person ever, and he didn’t deserve the demons he had. I was the glue for such a long time, and I found myself becoming . . . less and less sticky. The pieces just started to float away."
