Tonight's Met Gala theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," provides two millennia's worth of history and imagery from which to derive inspiration. For Ariana Grande, that meant pulling her look straight from one of the most famous places of worship on the planet.

Indulging the art history nerds among us, Grande donned a Vera Wang gown screen-printed with images from Michelangelo's iconic fresco, The Last Judgement, which adorns the sanctuary wall of the Sistine Chapel.

It's an emotional night for Grande. Not only is it her first Met Gala, but it's also the singer's first red carpet since her May 2017 show in Manchester, England, where 23 people died after a suicide bomber detonated inside the arena following her performance. Since the attack, Grande has devoted herself to charitable causes, hosting a televised benefit show for victims of the Manchester bombing and performing at similar events for Charlottesville and the March for Our Lives.

Welcome back, Ariana.
