  • Ariana Grande sent a message to people who are refusing to social distance amid coronavirus.

  • Here’s what she means and why it’s important.

After the week we just had, some people *still* went out over the weekend, despite everyone and their mother cautioning others about coronavirus. On Sunday, Ariana Grande vented her frustrations about just that and explained what’s on her mind when she sees people ignoring important precautions.

“I keep hearing from a surprising amount of people statements like ‘this isn’t a big deal’/‘we’ll be fine’...‘we still have to go about our lives’ and it’s really blowing my mind,” she said. “I understand if that is how u felt weeks ago. But please read about what’s going on. Please don’t turn a blind eye. It’s incredibly dangerous and selfish to take this situation that lightly.”

“The ‘we will be fine because we’re young’ mindset is putting people who aren’t young and/or healthy in a lot of danger. You sound stupid and privileged and you need to care more about others. like now,” she tweeted, adding, “Your hip-hop yoga class can f*cking wait i promise.”

If you’re out of the loop somehow, “social distancing” is defined by the CDC as “remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others when possible.” It’s important because it helps slow the spread of coronavirus, and it’s the reason so many colleges/restaurants/bars/arenas are closed right now.

If you social distance, you’ll protect yourself and others. But even more important, if we *all* social distance as a community, we can halt the virus’s progress.
