February 20th is a momentous day for music fans of all stripes. On this day in 1967 Kurt Cobain — noted Daniel Johnston fan, reluctant rock star, patron saint of sad indie boys everywhere — was born in Aberdeen, Washington. Twenty-one years later, Rihanna — fashion risk-taker par excellence and outspoken opponent of deadbeats everywhere — was born in Barbados.
There the similarities end, some would say. But look closer: Both are possessed of a DGAF attitude that makes Rihanna pen an elaborate revenge fantasy against exploitative media execs (see: “BBHMM”), and made Kurt Cobain bait the biggest (and most unstable) rock star in the world. Both had substances of choice — sadly, Kurt’s heroin addiction took him down a darker road than Rihanna’s love of smoking blunts and doing the Puppy Tail.
