Appropriate Way to Apologize to Dogs Requires a Specific 'Voice'

Dogs show certain signs that can tell us how they’re feeling through their tails, eyes, and ears. They have their ways to communicate with us and believe it or not, we can communicate back to them.

If you ever accidentally step on your dog's paw or bump into them, you want to immediately apologize. But what's the best way? TikTok user @oliveyoufreddie shared with us the appropriate way to apologize to dogs that researchers found most effective and it requires a certain voice. Take a look!

O.M.G. We didn't know this! Guess we got to brush up on our baby voice so we can make sure our fur babies know we didn't mean to bump into them. Luckily, this TikToker said in the video that dogs don't get upset with us. They know our intentions are good, but hey, we still want to apologize to make sure they know we love them!

"This makes sense bc when I accidentally stepped on my Yorkie's paw. I talked in a baby voice and he looked so happy after!" wrote @ratfromratatouille__. See? It does work! And honestly, who doesn't like to talk in a baby voice? After all, they are our little babies.

Did you know scientists have been studying the link between dogs' faces and communication? This is known as Dog Facial Action Coding System or DogFACS. It originated in 1978 to study human expression, then it was adapted to code expressions and facial movements in animals like chimpanzees before eventually measuring the expression of dogs. The study found that dogs use more facial expressions while in the presence of humans, which supports that they're sensitive to people and their expressions are attempts to communicate with us. SO cool!
