Is Apple Music worth it?

Is Apple Music worth it? According to users, it is. In a viral Reddit thread in 2023, a user listed the pros of Apple Music vs competitors like Spotify. “Been using Spotify since around 2015 for my music needs, but recently some bugs in the app became quite annoying & since I have mostly Apple devices, I decided to give Apple Music a go,” the user wrote.

Among the pros included Apple Music’s more aesthetically pleasing layout, lyrics syncing better to songs, and access to music videos. “App is overall more aesthetically pleasing. I enjoy having light & dark mode. The album artwork is big which I love,” the user wrote. “Lyrics are much better than Spotify’s even the ones that aren’t synced word by word. Having access to music video is great, I especially love this if I’m having a gathering. Having access to higher quality playback is good too.”

Tom’s Guide also wrote a review about how Apple Music provided a “better value than Spotify” in 2022. In its review, the site wrote about Apple Music’s “lossless,” higher-quality sets it apart from its competitors, such as Spotify, which costs the same price. “Really, though, it is lossless and spatial audio that makes Apple Music so attractive,” the site wrote. “Not only does this make it the better choice for listeners who want access to the best audio quality available, but given it’s no more expensive than a Spotify Premium subscription, it is also better value for those willing to pay.”

According to Apple’s website, Apple Music has its own audio compression technology called Appel Lossless Audio Doec that doesn’t lose the data contained in the original source file unlike other audio compression techniques used by competitor music services. “Most audio compression techniques lose some amount of data contained in the original source file. Lossless compression is a form of compression that preserves all of the original data,” the site reads. “Apple has developed its own lossless audio compression technology called Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC). In addition to AAC, the entire Apple Music catalog is now also encoded using ALAC in resolutions ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz (CD Quality) up to 24-bit/192 kHz.”

The site continued, “While the difference between AAC and lossless audio is virtually indistinguishable, we’re offering Apple Music subscribers the option to access music in lossless audio compression.”
