Apparently, the cast of Mamma Mia was drunk while filming the modern-day masterpiece, and it all truly makes sense now.

A viral TikTok shared by user Rosa Escandón shows clips from the documentary The Making of Mamma Mia, in which producer Gary Goetzman explains that the chaotic, infectious energy brought to the film by its A-list cast comes down to their daily rations of ouzo, a strong, anise-flavored Greek liquor.

“I think the freedom and liberation you’re feeling in these actors is really their ouzo ration every day,” Goetzman explains in the clip, which has since been viewed over 3.6M times on TikTok alone.

“You know, it kinda loosens it up a little for ’em, and you know — breakfast, a couple of shots just to get them going in the morning,” he adds. “I think that’s really where all the liberation and freedom and energy comes from.”

As Goetzman narrates, the clip shows Mamma Mia star Amanda Seyfried holding up a small bottle of ouzo, Julie Walters drinking what appears to be a heavy pour of wine, and gaggle-of-dads Stellan Skarsgård, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan sipping prosecco.

TikTokers were extremely amused by the revelation, but no one was too surprised by it.

“This explains why Julie Walters said she will never do another movie unless they do a Mamma Mia 3,” one wrote.

“They really sent a bunch of actors to Greece, made them get drunk and dance to ABBA, dream job really,” said another.

“This movie makes more sense now,” commented a third.

“Why does this make it 10x more iconic,” asked another, to which Escandón replied, “I mean, imagine being on that set.”

Oh, to be the cast of Mammia Mia, romping around the Greek islands, tipsy off ouzo and getting paid for it.
