Apparently People Are Trying to Vacuum Period Blood Out of Their Vaginas So Their Aunt Flow Ends Early

From Seventeen

  • A nurse's tweet went viral after she asked women to stop using vacuum hoses to allegedly attempt suck the blood out of their vaginas and end their periods early.

  • Of course this led many to ask follow up questions, which the nurse answered, explaining the dangerous nature of this practice.

Viral moments can be hilarious, yes, but every once in a while, one comes along that induces more concern than laughs (who remembers that whole boiling tampon fiasco?). Well, if you're of the faint of heart, stop reading now, because the latest alleged viral practice is extremely cringeworthy, and the results are very dangerous.

It all started when a woman who claims to be a nurse tweeted about her concern that women were using vacuum hoses to suck out their period blood. "Ladies...please stop using your vacuum hose to end your period early," she wrote. "You’re gonna wind up sucking out a lot more than blood! There were 2 cases of this so far this week, and both women had to be admitted. Just...STOP!" While the nurse has since gone private on Twitter, Cosmoobtained screenshots of the tweets and ensuing conversation.

This, of course, is terrifying. And unsurprisingly, it is extremely dangerous. While these women supposedly wanted to end their periods early, they ended up allegedly doing a lot of damage to themselves, and sent themselves into shock.

The nurse revealed that things could have even gone a lot worse than they already did. "Today's vacuums are extremely powerful," she said. "They could have sucked out a lot more than blood."

Kirsten Bechtel, MD, a Yale Medicine pediatric emergency-medicine doctor and co-director of injury prevention talked to Cosmo about the danger of using a vacuum in your vagina, explaining that it could end up piercing your uterus. “Part of the vaginal or uterine wall can be sucked in, tear, bleed, perforate, or cause an infection (pelvic inflammatory disease) by forcing bacteria on the outside of the perineum into the uterus,” she said.

It's also important to note that this practice would not even work in ending your period early because you can't remove the uterine lining that sheds while on your period, it happens naturally due to declines in hormone levels.

So, please DO NOT try this at home, I beg of you. Periods are annoying, I know, but we all have to deal with them. If you're struggling with dealing with your flow, consider going to your primary care physician. They can talk to you about healthy and safe options to help you control your period, like a specific birth control method, but don't ever try to suck out the blood, it will do WAY more harm than good.
