  • Meghan Markle and her fellow royals reportedly aren’t allowed to wear diamonds before 6 p.m. thanks to royal protocol.

  • The rule is in order to “not come across as flashy in your appearance.”

Obviously, the best part about following the royal family (other than corgi content) is keeping up with the insane amount of royal protocol they have to follow. From being forced to wear nude stockings in front of the queen to the truly insane rules about how to position your legs while sitting (it’s called The Duchess Slant, ever heard of it?), it’s all just a lot!

And now a new nugget of information has popped up curtesy of royal etiquette expert Myka Meier: There’s allegedly a daytime diamond ban. Meaning, royals can’t break out their fanciest jewelry before 6 p.m.

“Other jewels are worn pre-6 p.m.,” Meier told News.com.au. “Before 6 p.m., you’ll see metallics, gemstones, pearls, sapphires. At night, you’ll see the diamonds come out, and that’s in order to not come across as flashy in your appearance.”

But, like, WHAT IF YOUR EVENT STARTS AT 5:30 AND LASTS ALL NIGHT? What! Then!

In the interest of getting to the bottom of this, let’s check out some photos of Meghan Markle’s earrings. While she does typically wait to bust out her flashier pieces for evening events like Prince Charles’s 70th birthday party:

She has been known to wear more understated diamonds during the day:

In other words, it’s clear that the major jewelry is saved for evening time—but the occasional casual diamond (um, is there such a thing) seems okay for the day.
