Apparently, HGTV Doesn't Pay for the Renovations on "Brother vs. Brother"

When you watch a home renovation show on HGTV, there's always a moment when an unexpected expense pops up. Whether it's faulty wiring or water damage, the homeowner always gets hit with an additional cost. People reports that Jonathan Scott, cohost of HGTV's Property Brothers shows, revealed who foots the bill on Brother vs. Brother, when there isn't yet a homeowner to groan over the expenses.

In a Facebook Live broadcast Wednesday, Jonathan promoted the season finale of Brother vs. Brother by answering fan questions about the show. (Spoiler alert: Drew finally won this season.) One fan asked whether HGTV foots the bill for those "bad news" costs that spring up during renovations. It turns out that's not the case, because the Scotts' production company shoots the shows, and HGTV has already agreed to a set amount of money to pay for them.

"Keep in mind, this is Drew and my actual money," Jonathan said. "We buy these houses ourselves, we put up the money for the renovations ourselves, so everything to do with the project comes out of our pockets."

A fan pointed out that it seems like the renovations on the show ought to cost a lot more than they do. Jonathan agreed, and explained why. They're not just paying what you'd pay at Home Depot for materials, because they get a professional discount, and they have sponsorship from brands like Wayfair on the show. "You would probably never be able to renovate for the same price that we do on our shows because any time we get a wholesale price we pass that savings along to the homeowner, or on Brother vs. Brother it comes off our bottom line," Jonathan said. "The people who buy these houses, they're getting a steal of a deal."
