Apple iPhones aren’t known for getting viruses often. This is because Apple does a decent job of protecting your device against malicious infiltrators and vets the apps that it allows through pretty thoroughly. Still, mistakes happen sometimes. It’s important to understand which apps are most likely to put you at risk for a virus, and what to do if you suspect this has happened to your device. Remember: viruses can result in your data being stolen — important personal information such as your banking info, contacts, and more can be compromised.

This is the app that can give your phone a virus and what you should do to rid your phone of a virus.

Apps That Haven’t Been Updated

There’s a good reason why most of your apps have to be updated once in awhile. Active apps like Facebook and Instagram with many users are also being looked at pretty closely at all times to check for bugs and other hiccups that can come about. When bugs are detected, the app issues an updated that you can find in your settings. You should make it a point to check for app updates regularly so that your apps are current.

Though it isn’t likely to happen, apps that haven’t been updated can pose more of a risk to your phone. If you’ve been faithfully using an app that’s super old and has rarely been updated, this may not be the best sign either.

How To Handle Viruses

For starters, don’t believe every pop-up you receive that warns you that your phone has been infected. Chances are these companies, which often pretend they are Apple affiliates, are just out to make money and are clearing up problems that you don’t actually have.

If you suspect your phone has a virus, go into your settings. Check out your apps and if you see something that you didn’t download yourself, delete it. Clear your website data and browser history (sometimes malware exists on live storage). Restore your phone or restore it to factory settings.

And remember to always keep your apps up to date and to only download apps that you find in the App Store.
