I Can't Stop Watching This Hairstylist Perfectly Dye Her Rainbow Bangs

It’s no secret that rainbow hair photos and videos tend to strike Instagold. Recently, St. Louis-based hair pro Caitlin Ford of rainbow ombre hair fame put a fresh spin on the hair-color trend by focusing on dyeing just her bangs, using the primary colors of blue, yellow and red. “As a professional hairstylist, it pays homage to my work with color theory every day in the salon,” Ford tells Allure.

In the 58-second clip she posted, Ford’s already sporting rainbow bangs from a previous dye job and demonstrates how exactly she touches it up. “Because my bangs are C shaped, I try to follow the perimeter of how they are cut as best as possible with my subsections so the lines lay nicely and not too square,” she notes. Ford started the process by separating the top section of her bangs and placing them on a heavy piece of watercolor paper, cut into a half moon shape.

After using conditioner at the base of the bangs (to control the direction of how the hair lays), she painted on horizontal stripes of each color. With every paintbrush stroke, it becomes more and more mesmerizing to watch. Side note: I’ve already hit replay several times.

The first dye used on the outer edge of the bangs is Lime Crime Anime with a drop of Pravana Blue, followed by Pravana Neon Yellow in the middle, then Lime Crime Valentine for a touch of red. Ford left the dye in for 30 minutes (time may vary depending on the type of hair).

The good part of this look is that the colors could work for anyone. While she makes the steps may look easy, Ford has witnessed her fair share of at-home bleach fails and notes to leave the process to a colorist.

What you can do at home is keep up with your hair’s maintenance after any fantasy hair-color process. “It’s important to wash your hair in cold water to keep colors from bleeding and fading,” says Ford. “But I am a wimp about cold showers so I wash my bangs in the sink with cold water and the rest of my hair with warm water in the shower. Then, I just touch up the color on my ends as needed, since that part is easy.”

And there you have it — rainbow fringe in all its glory.
