Merriam-Webster must have had some Netflix insider info when they declared feminism the word of the year, because the subscription entertainment service has announced that She-Ra is getting a reboot in 2018.

If you don't know who She-Ra is, I'm sorry you presumably didn't exist yet during such an important time in our nation's cartoon history. Allow me to give you a quick lesson in her royal awesomeness.

She-Ra, a.k.a. Princess of Power (I can still sing her jingle at the drop of a hat), is the equally butt-kicking twin sister of He-Man, from whom she was separated at birth by some creepy dude named Hordak. After He-Man rescued her years later from her existence as a mind-controlled Evil Horde Force Captain on the planet Etheria, she returned to her true home of Eternia as Princess Adora, but she decides to return to Etheria with her Sword of Protection - the thing that transforms her into She-Ra - to lead the Great Rebellion against those jerks in the Evil Horde with the help of other powerful and gorgeous ladies and her pegasus-unicorn hybrid, Spirit.

I hope you were paying attention because there's a pop quiz at the end of this article. (JK.)

Anyway, like so many other women who were kids in the '80s, I loved the Mattel action figures (you can buy the ones pictured above here!), but I loved watching the animated series even more. It was short-lived - it had only two seasons in 1985 and 1986 - which is what makes news of this reboot such a thrill for so many of us 30- and 40-somethings.

A press release from Netflix and DreamWorks says that "fans are in store for an epic and timely tale that celebrates female friendship and empowerment, lead by a warrior princess tailor made for today," and that it will be a "modern take on the '80s girl power icon for a new generation of young fans." What it doesn't say, unfortunately, is exactly when in 2018 we'll get to binge-watch it.

In the meantime, you can always re-watch (or watch for the first time) the original version on DVD.
