Here's What You Need to Know About the Baby Bombshell on ‘The Walking Dead’

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

First, we had to say goodbye to our beloved Rick (Andrew Lincoln) on The Walking Dead. And now, the AMC series dropped a bombshell that has us wanting to throw a baby shower for the departed character.

Here’s what you need to know: Season nine, episode six of The Walking Dead, titled “Who Are You Now,” features a six-year time jump. When Magna (Nadia Hilker) visits Michonne (Danai Gurira) in the middle of the night, she’s greeted by a shocking scene: Michonne is standing next to a young boy named R.J. (aka Rick Jr.), who is her son with the former sheriff.

According to showrunner Angela Kang, the plot twist served as a transition from Rick’s story line. “It was a lot of fun, but also it’s just very daunting,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “Rick’s departure was so huge. Then episode six was almost like piloting a whole new show while still trying to keep the DNA of the show that we’ve been watching for so many years.”

Yes, Rick’s baby news is shocking, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise to dedicated TWD fans. Back in episode three, titled “Warning Signs,” Michonne and Rick discussed the possibility of having a child together. Although we assumed the promise went unfulfilled, it appears there was much more going on than AMC let us see.

Well played, Kang. The Walking Dead airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
